OIA review finds more support needed to improve results

The Public Service Association (PSA) says there is much to support in the Chief Ombudsman’s report into the operation of the Official Information Act.

"We’re pleased that the Ombudsman took the time to review the performance of such an importance piece of legislation," said Glenn Barclay, PSA national secretary.
"The recommendations to improve resourcing, staffing and guidance are much needed and will help to lessen perceived and real delays in OIA responses.

"Resourcing is also a significant issue for the Office of the Ombudsman itself, and this must be addressed in order for the office to fulfil its important monitoring role.

"We also look forward to the implementation of the recommendation to provide guidance to staff in ministerial offices.

"We want to see a code of conduct for ministerial staff to help both them and other public servants to ensure the lines of responsibility are clear.

"Ultimately we would like to see a shift to a proactive culture of disclosure which would help ensure our democracy remains strong," said Glenn Barclay.
