Horizon Research had the most accurate poll results on the alternative New Zealand flag: just 0.12% out.

Preliminary results from the Electoral Commission released on December 11 had the Black, White and Blue silver fern flag on top - but only just.

The flag, designed by Kyle Lockwood, won in the fourth round of voting according to preliminary results, taking 50.53 per cent of the vote.

Horizon Research had the black, white and blue Silver Fern flag at 50.41% of the vote. Just 0.12% out.

Final referendum results are due on December 15.

A second binding referendum to vote for retention of the existing flag, or the one chosen in the first referendum, will be held in March, 2016.
