Vacancies continue to rise in November – MBIE Jobs Online report

The number of job vacancies rose by 2 per cent in November, with a 6.9 per cent rise over the year, according to the latest Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) Jobs Online report.

The November rise was led by increased vacancies in the hospitality and tourism industry and the accounting, HR, legal and administration industry (both up 1.7 per cent).

Seven out of eight occupation groups had increased job vacancies in the past month. The biggest increases were for labourers (up 2.8 per cent) and professionals (up 2.7 per cent).

The number of vacancies rose in all skill levels, with the largest increases occurring in unskilled (up 3.0 per cent) and highly skilled job vacancies (up 2.9 per cent).

Of the ten regions, nine experienced an increase in vacancies. Auckland saw the largest increase (up 2.4 per cent). The Manawatu-Wanganui/Taranaki region had the only decrease (down 0.6 per cent).

Vacancies in Canterbury grew by 0.5 per cent in November, but fell by 8.8 per cent over the year.

MBIE’s Labour Market Trends Manager, David Paterson says, “The results are consistent with improved hiring conditions reflected in ANZ’s Business Outlook.”
