Police cross line on drink drive rules

Police cross line on drink drive rules

Hospitality New Zealand Spokesperson Adam Cunningham says the Police have crossed the line in criticising the Know Your Limits campaign, which shows how people can drink and stay safely within the law when driving.

Mr Cunningham says that in the past 24 hours, a Police spokesperson has been giving a moral opinion in media reports, rather than informing people on law and safety.

"We rely on the Police to stick to the facts, but they have stepped over the line. They are moralising and trying to scare people by misleading them.

"The Police are undermining public faith in their ability to carry out the law as it is written.

"Science says men can consume three standard drinks over two hours and be under the lower 250mcg drink-drive limit. Women can safely enjoy two standard drinks over a two-hour period. That's a good rule of thumb for socialising over summer."

Hospitality New Zealand recommends that those out for big nights organise safe alternative transport.

The Know Your Limits campaign is supported by the Brewers’ Association and responsible consumption education initiative Cheers!

Detailed information about standard drinks can be found at www.cheers.org.nz.
