Whangarei Rodeo Protest

Whangarei Rodeo Protest

Protesters next stop Whangarei Rodeo

On Saturday morning animal activists will protest outside the Whangarei Rodeo.

Last weekend they gathered in celebration outside the Warkworth Rodeo which had been cancelled due to severe weather.

The activists plan to protest outside a number of rodeo events across the country this rodeo season and are calling on the Government to implement a nationwide ban.

“Investigations reveal that animals are regularly abused at rodeos in our country. Their tails are twisted; they’re, kicked and poked excessively with electric prods. This just isn’t acceptable,” says Direct Animal Action spokesperson Kathleen Lafferty.

“This season a horse has already died after it became stuck in a fence. And last season two bulls were so severely injured that they had to be euthanised,”

“Rodeos are legalised cruelty, it’s clear that laws do not go far enough to protect animals from suffering at the rodeo,”

“We want the government to ban rodeo in our country. With even parts of the U.S. now banning rodeo, it’s actually an embarrassment that we’re falling so far behind overseas trends,” (1)

“Our protest this Saturday will be peaceful. We don’t want confrontation with rodeo-goers; but we believe it’s crucial to take a stand against this cruelty,” says Ms. Lafferty.
