NZUN - Syria meeting

NZUN - Syria meeting

Permanent Mission of New Zealand to the United Nations: Media Advisory

This afternoon in New York (starting at around 1630 EST) the UN Security Council will hold closed consultations on the humanitarian situation in besieged areas in Syria. Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Stephen O’Brien will brief the Council.

The following quote is attributable to Gerard van Bohemen, Permanent Representative of New Zealand to the United Nations:

“New Zealand and Spain called for today’s Security Council meeting on the situation in the Syrian town of Madaya following reports of people dying from starvation.

The tactic of siege and starvation is one of the most appalling characteristics of the Syrian conflict.

It’s encouraging that a convoy of humanitarian supplies has arrived in Madaya today, but this is just the start. We need unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access to all those in need in Syria.”

Ambassador van Bohemen will do a media stakeout following the meeting at approximately 1730 EST (11.30am in New Zealand).
