Wellington-Singapore Airlines News Terrific

The Taxpayers’ Union is welcoming news that Singapore Airlines is considering a route from Wellington via Canberra and says it undermines the case for local or central government corporate welfare for privately owned Infratil to extend the Wellington runway. Jordan Williams, Executive Director of the Taxpayers’ Unionsays:

“Assuming the reports are correct, this is fantastic news for Wellingtonians and all taxpayers.”

“We’ve been hearing from many Wellington ratepayers that they are concerned with the prospect of an enormous cheque being written for a runway extension without the business case for long-haul connections from the capital being established.”

“We hope that Infratil, which owns two-thirds of Wellington International Airport, decides to build the runway anyway. Singapore Air’s decision may make that happen.”
