Savalalo Market Fundraising Appeal Launched

Savalalo Market Fundraising Appeal Launched

An official global ‘Savalalo Market Fundraising Appeal’ has now been launched.

The fundraising appeal is in response to the plight of stall holders and small market vendors whose livelihoods were destroyed when the ‘Savalalo Market’ in Apia, Samoa was completely burned to the ground on Saturday evening 16th January 2016.

Most if not all stall holders and small market vendors are uninsured. That means that whatever stock, equipment and fit-out they lost in the fire are not insured. As such, their ability to restart is both challenging and doubtful.

In essence, the real tragedy of this fire is that thousands of livelihoods depended on the business activities of the Savalalo Market. This was confirmed by Mrs. Leuluaialii Rosemary Selesitine, president of the Savalalo flea market stall holders association.

The ‘Savalalo Market’ is an iconic feature landmark of Apia over many generations. It holds many fond memories, experiences and stories for both overseas visitors and locals alike.

An account has been set up for the global Samoan and non-Samoan communities and friends of the Savalalo Market to make a donation towards a fund that will be dispersed directly to the affected stall holders and small market vendors to assist in rebuilding their businesses, and livelihood.

The ‘Savalalo Market Fundraising Appeal’ is an act of kindness to give hope and new beginning for the stall holders and small vendors that are affected by this unforeseen event.
