Corporate Welfare Should Be Open to Public Scrutiny

The Taxpayers’ Union is again slamming Wellington City Council’s shambolic information management and secrecy relating to how it uses ratepayer funds, following leaked details of the Council wooing Singapore Airlines. Responding to the report, Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“How dare Deputy Mayor Justin Lester try to keep secret a corporate welfare deal he negotiated that hands out $800,000 of ratepayer money per year, every year for a decade.”

“It’s the secrecy of these sorts of schemes, taking money from Wellington ratepayers to fund a foreign owned airline, which make so many suspicious of ratepayer money being used for the runway extension. At a minimum all corporate welfare schemes should be transparent and open to public scrutiny by default."
