Eagle Joins Lester in Wanting Ratepayer Funded Professional Sport

2 FEBRUARY 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Responding to the calls from Wellington City Councillor, Paul Eagle, for ratepayers tofund the Wellington Lions provincial rugby team to the tune of $250,000, Taxpayers’ Union spokesperson Ben Craven says:

“Every week a Councillor is in the paper with some new harebrained way to spend our money. First there’s the Mayor’s Island Bay cycleway, last week we discovered Justin Lester’s secret handout to Singapore Airlines and this week Paul Eagle wants us to fork out a quarter million to his favourite sports team. No wonder Wellington rates are going up!”

“Paul Eagle's not alone in wanting his team to get ratepayer dosh. Last year Justin Lester was calling for ratepayer handouts for his team of choice – the privately owned Wellington Phoenix.”

“Councillors should be sticking to ensuring that ratepayers are provided with low cost, quality core services, rather that putting their hands deeper into ratepayer pockets for personal pet causes.”
