Sculpture Funding Shows Poor Priorities

Responding to the report that the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) has paid $300,000 in addition to the Christchurch City Council’s $502,500 for artwork by Sir Antony Gormley, Taxpayers’ Union spokesman, Ben Craven, says:

“There is no doubting that artwork contributes to the vibrancy of a city. But at a time when Christchurch is still being assailed by aftershocks, and with liquefaction continuing to effect private properties and roads, we really have to question the priorities of CERA and the Council.”

“Rather than stumping up ratepayers’ and taxpayers’ money for nice-to-haves, Christchurch should look to the privately funded Wellington Sculpture Trust for inspiration.”
