Early childhood educators support paid parental leave bill

Early childhood educators support paid parental leave bill

Early childhood educators say parents need more paid parental leave so they can choose to be at home with babies

NZEI Te Riu Roa has today presented its submission to the Government Administration Select Committee in support of Sue Moroney’s bill to extend paid parental leave.

Executive member Virginia Oakly says early childhood educators in particular support parents to have the option to look after their babies at home, supported by longer paid parental leave.

NZEI representatives said that many parents don’t have the option of quality, local affordable early childhood education for their babies and toddlers, and that many quality services are not set up for young babies.

"Recent reports raise serious questions about the benefits of early childhood education for babies and toddlers, and support greater choice for parents in the form of extending paid parental leave.

New parent and NZEI member Juliette Davies told the committee that time off work would give parents help to give their children a better, less stressful start to life, helping them to grow to be better equipped members of society.”
