“As one of the 60 people identified and interviewed as a person of interest in the 1080 poison scare, I note with interest some of the facts that have come out now that the individual concerned Jeremy Kerr, has been sentenced.
Kerr was part of the poison industry, he had access to 1080 which could only have been sourced from a government owned organisation. Animal Control Products is wholly owned by the NZ government and is the only importer of 1080 into NZ. Their records show that they and Landcare Research another government agency gave Kerr supposedly a small amount of 1080 for testing yet Kerr claims to have flushed a kilogram of it down the toilet. This is a massive amount capable of killing many tens of thousands of people. Therein lies the problem, where did Kerr get 1080; was it from a Government controlled agency or some illegal source?
Either way it has proven that large amounts of 1080 can be sourced by anyone in the poison industry with a little knowledge.
1080 is classed by the World Health Organisation as one of the 10 most dangerous poisons on the planet. This colourless, odourless, tasteless poison has long been recognised as a potential deadly weapon for terrorism by United States Security organisations and that is the main reason it was banned in the USA. Many other countries have similar concerns and yet little old naïve New Zealand not only promotes its use at a Government level, we ship thousands of tons of 1080 laced pellets around our country each year in commercial vehicles with no particular safety precautions. It is shipped to isolated depots and operation sites as if it was fertiliser or grain often in the same trucks.
The Baby formula 1080 poison scare showed what can happen if this poison gets into the wrong hands, how dangerous it can be to people and our export markets. The blackmailer a very dangerous person, originally labelled a terrorist, until he was identified as one of the poisoners and it now appears that he is a misguided individual, motivated by financial reasons. One wonders if the Press, the police and the Prime Minister would have been so forgiving if he had indeed been one of those genuinely opposed to the widespread indiscriminate aerial application of 1080 poison.
The 1080 poison industry is a disaster
waiting to happen and when it does it will be too late to
say we told you
so.”
