Women’s Refuge welcomes Joint Police Leadership Statement

Women’s Refuge welcomes Joint Police Leadership Statement

A call by NZ and Australian Police Commissioners for the community to challenge behaviour that turns a blind eye to family violence and attitudes which condone sexism and disrespect of women was welcomed by Chief Executive of Women’s Refuge Dr Ang Jury today.

“It is past time that we recognised and began to make serious efforts to eliminate the underlying and pervasive sexism that enables family and sexual violence to continue at such endemic and destructive levels. It is refreshing and hugely encouraging to see public comments such as these from the most senior levels of Australasian policing” she says. “From the perspective of Women’s Refuge, it is vitally important that we emphasise the three central messages in the Commissioners’ words today. Firstly, victims are never to blame for the violence perpetrated against them. Secondly, a life free from violence is a basic human right. And finally, reducing violence and the horrific toll it exacts upon us all is everyone’s responsibility.”
