Generation Zero Launches Better Buses Report

Generation Zero Launches Better Buses Report - Generation Zero

Public Transport lobby group Generation Zero are today releasing a report criticising the failings of the Auckland Bus network and proposing urgent solutions.

“Our bus network is not coping with the demand we have now. If we are want to create a liveable low carbon city this has to change, and quickly” say’s Leroy Beckett, Generation Zero’s Auckland Director

The report is an analysis of Generation Zero’s Better Buses campaign which solicited feedback on the bus network from users in March. The online submission form received over 1300 responses.

“We heard from frustrated bus users all over Auckland who are sick of having buses go past full, buses leaving them stranded late at night, and buses which don’t even turn up. Something has to change if public transport is to be a viable alternative” says Beckett

A majority of these submissions came from posters Generation Zero put up at bus stops (which Auckland Transport claimed broke bylaws and said they would be removing). These submission reflect the views and frustrations of everyday Aucklanders.

“The submissions paint a picture of a bus network which is failing its city. Aucklanders want to leave the car at home, but don’t see buses as a reliable alternative”

The report proposes four implementable solutions to the problems facing the network.
Double Deckers for Peak
Longer Peak Frequency
Better All Day Frequency
More Lanes, More Often

“We are calling on the board of Auckland Transport to adopt our recommendations. We also looking to mayoral and council candidates to support our proposals to show they are listening to the concerns of everyday Aucklanders.”

The report is available now at http://www.generationzero.org/better-buses

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
