Analysis of public place assaults, sexual assaults, and robberies in 2015 – Media release

6 May 2016

Statistics NZ released today an analysis of reported victimisations of assault, sexual assault, and robbery offences, in public places, for the 2015 calendar year. The tables show victimisation counts by area unit and meshblock, and victimisation rates per 10,000 estimated resident population by area unit.

Key findings:

• 24,035 public place assaults, sexual assaults, and robberies were recorded by Police in 2015.

• The national average rate of public place assaults, sexual assaults, and robberies in 2015 is about 52 per 10,000 estimated resident population.

• The highest victimisation count by area unit occurs in central business districts of main urban areas

• Over one-fifth (about 21 percent) of all area units have no victimisations of this kind in 2015.

• Almost three-quarters (about 74 percent) of all area units have a victimisation rate less than the national average rate.

Only about 10 percent of all area units have a victimisations rate more than twice the national average rate.

Statistics NZ carried out the analysis in response to a media organisation’s request. The analysis is based on NZ Police data, and on 2015 population estimates and geospatial data.

• The tables show the following information by area unit, and NZ Police source data by meshblock:

• main urban areas with population estimates greater than or equal to 3,000, top 10 results
