DOC stands by system for maintaining structures and huts

DOC says it has a very detailed and thorough system for checking and maintaining its more than 13 500 structures and huts to ensure they are safe for public use.

Director General of Operations Mike Slater says DOC has a team of trained staff and qualified engineers which inspect all bridges, platforms and huts regularly and it prioritises significant maintenance work for prompt attention.

Mike Slater says DOC maintains a detailed register of on-going maintenance work and none of this work currently involves issues which engineers consider pose an immediate threat to the public.

Mike Slater says 30 of its structures do have serious issue that needs to be actioned. These issues do not pose an immediate threat and work to resolve them is programmed over the next six months.

He says this level of on-going maintenance is consistent with DOC’s normal work programme and reflects the detailed system it runs for checking and maintaining its structures.

Mike Slater says like any large infrastructure manager, DOC is always going to have significant work to deal with and that’s why it has these work prioritising and tracking systems in place.

DOC spends about $80 million a year to keep its network of huts, tracks and campsites up to standard and safe for use.

Mike Slater says the welfare of visitors and staff is paramount for DOC and the department stands by the safety of its structures and the thoroughness of its inspections.
