Meat and dairy lead fall in manufacturing sales
Meat and dairy lead fall in manufacturing sales – Media release
8 June 2016
Total manufacturing sales fell in the March 2016 quarter, led by a fall in meat and dairy product manufacturing, Statistics New Zealand said today.
After adjusting for seasonal effects, the volume of total manufacturing sales fell 1.2 percent in the March 2016 quarter, with meat and dairy product manufacturing volumes falling 7.8 percent.
"Meat and dairy product manufacturing sales volumes fell in the March 2016 quarter, following increases in the previous two quarters," business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly said.
"Across the rest of manufacturing, we saw rises in several industries, with petroleum and coal manufacturing leading the increases."
The sales volume for total manufacturing excluding meat and dairy was up 0.7 percent in the March 2016 quarter. Sales rose for eight of the 12 other manufacturing industries.
The main industry movements were in:
• petroleum and coal product manufacturing – up 5.4 percent (not seasonally adjusted)
• chemical, polymer, and rubber product manufacturing – down 4.2 percent.
The trend for total manufacturing sales
volume, which gives a longer-term picture of movements,
appears to be flattening after recent rises.
The actual value of manufacturing sales including price changes was $24.2 billion in the March 2016 quarter, down $224 million (0.9 percent) from the March 2015 quarter.
