School support staff pay cut case goes before court

A legal case challenging Novopay’s decision to cut the fortnightly pay of 6000 school support staff by 3.7% this year will return to court tomorrow.
The Employment Court will hear the Ministry of Education’s appeal against a successful case taken by NZEI Te Riu Roa to the Employment Relations Authority earlier this year.
The 6000 teacher aides and administrative and specialist staff in schools who annualise their term time pay over the year have had their fortnightly pay cut by 3.7 percent since January by Novopay because of a calendar anomaly.
NZEI Te Riu Roa took the case on behalf of support staff members, arguing that Novopay’s decision was in breach of their collective agreement. In April the Authority ruled in NZEI’s favour.
