Planeta.com Opens Indigenous Peoples Week 2016

Planeta.com Opens Indigenous Peoples Week 2016 #ipw6

Planeta.com’s sixth annual celebration of social web storytelling about Indigenous peoples and tourism around the world takes place August 8-14. Partners in this endeavour are Nutti Sámi Siida, TIME Unlimited, Madidi Jungle Ecolodge and The Travel Word.

Hashtag: #ipw6

Participation is free. Donations are welcome. Registration is open.

The objective is two-fold: to raise awareness of Indigenous tourism options around the world and to improve digital literacy skills among the Indigenous tourism providers themselves.

The week focuses attention on August 9, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

Indigenous Peoples Week takes place everywhere at once, so consider the Planeta Wiki page — http://planeta.wikispaces.com/indiweek2016— the conference hub.

As a non-traditional unconference, participants are asked to actively use the social web a way to curate and share stories relevant to Indigenous travel and tourism as well as broader concerns. Highlights are featured on the Planeta Wiki as well as Storify — https://storify.com/ronmader/ipw— and Slideshare — http://www.slideshare.net/planeta/indiweek2016

How This Works

Everyone's invited. Our circle of conversation includes Indigenous and non-indigenous peoples around the world.

Talking points include biodiversity conservation, crafts, cultural heritage, food and literacy (traditional reading and writing and digital literacy -- the emerging read write culture).

Become social web literate by registering and participating on a few social web channels or apps. Be creative and make something. Be generous and encourage someone else. Applaud the work of others who inspire and be generous. Strive toward empathy - consider someone else's point of view. It may sound like a lot, but if you take the deep dive this week, you'll be surprised by what you learn.
