MPI response to PSA

MPI has started a consultation with our staff on proposals to improve how we prepare for and manage food, biosecurity, trade and animal welfare responses, and deliver compliance and investigation services.

Under the proposals, the roles of 49 staff – about 2% of MPI’s workforce – could be potentially significantly affected and we are consulting with these individuals. Most of these roles are at manager level.

There will be no change in staff numbers if the proposals are implemented. They propose a change in the management structure and up to 10 roles will be redistributed to the frontline. Overall staff numbers remain the same.

The driver for this process is about making sure we deliver our services as well as we can; it’s not a cost reduction exercise. The proposals are normal practice in assessing organisational capacity and the desire to develop an ongoing commitment to excellence.

We are in the consultation phase so it’s too early to say for sure what changes will take place.

We expect final decisions on the proposals to be reported back to our staff in September, once we’ve had time to consider their feedback.

While any change process is unsettling, our staff are extremely professional and we do not believe there will be an impact on services.

It would not be appropriate to comment further on the detail of the proposals until we have had sufficient time to consult with our staff.
