Greenpeace on terms of reference for Hawke's Bay inquiry
Monday, 22 August 2016, 3:16 pm Press Release: Greenpeace
Ahead of the Prime Minister's announcement this afternoon of
the terms of reference for the Government inquiry into the
Hawke's Bay gastro outbreak, Greenpeace Agriculture
Campaigner Genevieve Toop said:
"As well as the specifics
of the Hawke's Bay contamination, this inquiry must look at
wider systemic issues around land use and its impacts on
water quality in New Zealand.
"It needs to include a
thorough examination of the deterioration of waterways right
across the country as a result of industrial dairy
farming.
"It should also look at the likely ramifications
of the proposed Ruataniwha Dam in Hawke's Bay, which will
mean more dairy cows in the Tukituki catchment and more
pollution of local
waterways."
