Government’s Overhaul of Family Violence Laws

Government’s Overhaul of Family Violence Laws Ignores the Most Vulnerable Members of the Family

Media Release September 13th 2016

The unborn child is a member of the human family. No question. Unborn children have mothers, fathers, grandparents, possibly sisters and brothers. It is truly a member of the family and our community, These children have every right to be respected and protected. Every day twenty-five children in the womb are violently killed in a clinic or in one of our hospitals. They are our brothers and sisters. Why are we not standing up to protect them. We ask why there is so much family violence in New Zealand. Should we really be surprised?

“The Government is committed to doing all we can to ensure New Zealanders are protected from family violence,” says John Key.

How can the government make a commitment to ensure that all New Zealanders are protected from family violence when it continues to ignore the desperate plight of unborn New Zealanders? Clearly Mr Key is not prepared to protect children who have not yet seen the light of day. Right to Life believes the killing of our unborn is a crime against humanity.

The government’s policy of making contraception and abortion readily available is going to ensure that this violence against the unborn continues. In fact abortion is being promoted by Family Planning as a back up to failed contraception.

Researchers say 25 percent of women having abortions worldwide were victims of partner violence. A study done at Epsom Day Clinic in Auckland in 2008 revealed that one third of women seeking an abortion had been subject to domestic abuse. This result is conservative as many women would be too ashamed to admit that they were being abused. This violence against women is intolerable and should be stopped.

Here are some concerns

• Abortion decreases an individual’s instinctual restraint against the occasional rage felt toward those dependent on his or her care.

• Permissive abortion diminishes the social taboo mitigating aggression against the defenceless.

• Abortion has devalued children, thus diminishing the value of caring for children who have been born.

• Abortion truncates the developing mother-infant bond, thereby diminishing her future mothering capability.

Our government is never going to be able to address the problem of family violence until it has the courage to stop aiding and abetting the hidden violence going on inside the womb.
