NZ’s First Human Trafficking Convictions

-- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –

GUILTY ON ALL CHARGES
NZ’s FIRST HUMAN TRAFFICKING CONVICTIONS

AUCKLAND HIGH COURT

Mr Foraz Ali, of Papatoetoe, was today convicted of trafficking 15 Fijian Indians into New Zealand to exploit them for his own gain.

Stand Against Slavery (SAS) CEO Peter Mihaere is delighted with the outcome. "Today is a historic moment for New Zealand as we see our first human trafficking convictions." Mr Faroz Ali was convicted of trafficking 15 Fijian nationals into New Zealand. "Let this be a message of would-be traffickers and exploiters,” Mihaere says, "this case demonstrates that we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour in New Zealand. This is a battle won, but not the war. New Zealand needs to be better resourced and equipped to deal with this insidious and sophisticated crime.”

Peter Mihaere gives special acknowledgement to Immigration NZ (INZ) and in particular the Serious Offences Unit who have worked significantly to get this case to trial and this outcome is payment for a job well done.
