E tū urges people to vote this Suffrage Day

19 September, 2016

MEDIA RELEASE

E tū urges people to vote this Suffrage Day

The union E tū is urging people to honour Suffrage Day by exercising their right to vote in the local body elections.

Today marks the day in 1893 when New Zealand women won the vote.

E tū’s Women’s Committee Convenor, Marianne Bishop says the forebears of today’s women fought for the right to vote and It’s important people exercise their vote.

“People need to recognise today as Suffrage Day and make sure they vote, and that they vote for candidates who support the issues they care about”, says Marianne.

She says for E tū, that means candidates who support the Living Wage, as well as Equal Pay for women.

Marianne says E tū has done a lot of work to find out which candidates support these key interests, given the high number of E tū women members who work for low pay in care and support.

“I would urge members to find out as much as they can on where the candidates stand on these issues,” says Marianne who is a Wellington care worker.

She says crucially, the election includes the selection of board members for DHBs.

“DHB candidates should be supporting the Equal Pay campaign, given our funding comes from them” she says.
