Why warships can’t get wet

Media Release: Why warships can’t get wet
From Auckland Peace Action
Date: Tuesday 15 November

The navy warships will arrive into Waitematā Harbour a day early because of rain.

“The decision to reschedule the entry of the US and other navy warships into Auckland Harbour has been taken to so the ships avoid any encounter with the peace movement that might embarrass the government,” said Auckland Peace Action spokesperson Virginia Lambert.

“It is ridiculous that after a year of planning, the date is moved forward one day due to bad weather – these are warships after all, not wooden rafts.”

“Given that people are stranded and communities totally cut off except by sea from the earthquake, it is amazing that the Navy is going ahead with this war festival at all. It is disgraceful.”

Flotilla Action Coordinator Sian Robertson says that the flotilla will go ahead to challenge these boats on Saturday during the international naval review.

“We had prepared to meet the navies on Thursday. Now we have decided that we will sail out to challenge these warships on Saturday to enable as many Aucklanders as possible to be part of the flotilla. We think the community is on our side. We want a neutral, peace-making nation, not a country that spends time and resources preparing for war,” said Ms Robertson

“We’re taking to the water because we are genuinely alarmed about the potential for world war. Tensions are very high. The current global situation is akin to a group of people standing waste deep in petrol arguing over who has the most matches.”
