Young NZ political leaders to visit Australia

Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives

For release 22 November 2016

Young New Zealand political leaders to connect with counterparts in Australia

A delegation of young political leaders, led by Fletcher Tabuteau MP, representing the New Zealand First, National, Labour, and Green Parties, is visiting Australia this week as part of the annual Australia - New Zealand Political Exchange. The reciprocal exchange was established by the Australian Parliament to expose future political leaders to the political, social, economic, and cultural systems of their Trans-Tasman neighbour.

The Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament, Rt Hon David Carter, said “New Zealand and Australia enjoy one of the world’s closest relationships, based on historical links, shared values, trade and a friendly sporting rivalry. Exchanges for our young leaders are an important part of strengthening connections and increasing understanding across the Tasman".

The delegation is interested in learning more about Australia’s bicameral parliamentary system, and how politicians engage with their constituents across geographically vast and isolated electorates. The delegation will also commemorate and discuss our shared history during the First World War as part of ongoing commemorations being marked in both our countries.

In Australia, the delegation will hold talks with representatives of Australia’s major political parties, the President of the Senate, Senator the Hon Stephen Parry, the Speaker of the House, Hon Tony Smith, and officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The delegation is looking forward to meeting with the Australian Electoral Commission, observing question time in the House and Senate, and paying its respects at the Australian War Memorial.

Before returning to New Zealand, the delegation will visit the Victorian Parliament in Melbourne to gain insight into the operations of a State Parliament. Their visit will include observing question time and meeting with the President of the Legislative Council, The Honourable Bruce Atkinson MLC and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, The Honourable Telmo Languiller MLA.

The exchange runs from 19 November to 25 November 2016.
