Gib-board workers join Auckland “strike wave”
Approximately 50 workers from CV Compton, a Gib board distributor in Auckland, have walked off the job today and are protesting outside Fletcher Building’s head-office in Penrose.
The strike comes after an indefinite strike at popular advertorial company Brand Developers TV Shop where distribution centre staff are now in their second day of strike action and BNT Automotive Supplies (see below).
Workers at each company are sighting low wages and housing costs that are rising through the roof as the reason for taking action.
FIRST Union organiser Bryce Hamilton said the CV Compton workers are seeking a living wage to keep up with Auckland housing costs.
“These workers are at the heart of the construction boom but their employer is only offering a measly 0.33 cents on top of rates that are already close to minimum wage.”
“The benefits of the construction boom should be shared, not hoarded at the top.”
