MEDIA RELEASE

PETERS TOO POSH FOR JETSTAR?

14 FEBRUARY 2017
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Taxpayers' Union is disappointed but not surprised the Rt. Hon Winston Peters is upset with a change in Government policy which means politicians will soon be 'roughing it with the people' on Jetstar. Last year the Taxpayers’ Union highlighted the hypocrisy of Government Ministers telling the public to fly Jetstar while apparently being too posh to fly on the budget carrier. It took a year, but the Government has finally brought Jetstar on board for Government travel.

Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“Last year we called on politicians to practice what they preach in praising the competition brought to our skies by Jetstar. Of the month we surveyed, $74,503 was spent on domestic flights with not a single minister taking a Jetstar flight. Not even one.”

"With the Government's 'no Jetstar' policy set to change, we are disappointed that Mr Peters is criticizing the decision."

“Mr Peters should be more focused on selecting flights based on value for money, not wasting his time objecting to the Government’s use of Jetstar. If politicians have to go without a few Koru lounge canapés to save taxpayer dollars, then so be it.”

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
