Have Your Say About Fresh Water Management in the Wairarapa

Have Your Say About Fresh Water Management in the Wairarapa

Wairarapa wants bucket loads of wonderful swimmable, drinkable, fishable, sustainable water, and now the community can play a role in channelling the way forward.

The Ruamāhanga Whaitua Committee – a group charged with developing a plan for improving water quality - is considering options for managing contaminants in the Wairarapa catchment.

As part of ongoing consultations, the committee released a survey seeking feedback about the way contaminants, from both urban and rural land uses, might best be managed.

Ruamāhanga Whaitua Committee Chair Peter Gawith says it is important everyone has their say because their feedback will steer the implementation programme.

“The topic of discharges into our waterways is a complex one,” Peter says, “and consideration needs to be given to the circumstances and needs of both urban and rural water users”.

“The committee want to understand how local communities feel about different freshwater management options, and we hope residents take this opportunity to play a part in the process.”

Though the current survey focuses on contaminants, opportunities for public input about other freshwater management issues will be announced in the coming months.

The survey and supporting information can be found on Greater Wellington Regional Council’s consultation site:http://haveyoursay.gw.govt.nz/ruamahanga-whaitua

More information about the Whaitua process can be found on Greater Wellington’s website.

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
