Labour Party spot on – not government’s role to own hotels

17 AUGUST 2017

Responding to Carmel Sepuloni's comments to the media, Jordan Williams, Executive Director of the Taxpayers' Union says:

“As we learn more and more about the Government paying twice QV values for hotels to house the homeless, it becomes clearer and clearer how ridiculous the Government’s response to the housing crisis has become.”

“The last time the Government owned this many hotels, it was called the Tourist Hotel Corporation, and Muldoon was Prime Minister. Like then, this sort of wastage was to pepper over market failure caused by over-regulation.”

“Nationals hotels are little better than Labour’s state houses. The only solution is to cut the regulatory red-tape and get the Government out of the way of increasing the supply of affordable housing.”
