Millennial film crew explains politics with Suzy Cato, Spike the Penguin

We are a small collective of young adults eager to encourage political engagement. Following the election of Donald Trump in the US we each individually started to seek some outlet for our political frustration. It began with us trying to engage more with our own political scene here in New Zealand. One of the things that stood out is how few young people were engaged in this process. Upon investigation we found a lot of young people knew they should vote and be engaged but didn’t know where to start.

We decided that short political party policy videos would be the most helpful in the current climate, with the hope that we could expand the idea for non-election times. Today we released a video on tax policy, following on from previous episodes on the environment, and education. Each video focuses on a key policy area and is hosted by a children’s television presenter from the 90s or early 2000s, including Suzy Cato and Spike the Penguin. In casting these hosts we hope to appeal to the nostalgia of millennials and spark interest in politics.

We lift quotes verbatim from the party websites, while trying to clarify points and think about what things people our age want to know about. Our goal is to be unbiased; we want people to be engaged, we want them to get amongst.
