NZTU takes full-page advertisements in tomorrow’s national newspapers

18 SEPTEMBER 2017
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

‘More spending equals more tax and more debt’ is the key message of full-page pre-election newspaper and online advertising campaign being launched tomorrow by the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

The taxpayer group has added together the individual costings of the various parties, who might form the government. The ads present scenarios of what potential government combinations might cost, per Kiwi household.

Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, said, “Thanks to generous support from our tens of thousands of members and supporters, we are able to arm voters with the facts about how much all the political policies actually cost.”

“MMP means that it is impossible to tell precisely what policies will make it through post-election negotiations. Neither National nor Labour have told the public how much of our money they are willing to spend to buy the support of minor parties, which they are likely to need to form a government."

"Ironically, it is the small parties that are promising some of the most expensive election policies, so it is up to the major parties to be more transparent on what they’ll be willing to bargain about."

The figures used, are taken from the Taxpayers’ Union election Bribe-O-Meter, available at www.bribe-o-meter.nz.
