International travel and migration statistics give the number of overseas visitors, New Zealand resident travellers, and permanent and long-term migrants entering or leaving New Zealand.

Key facts
In November 2017 compared with November 2016 visitor arrivals were up 26,500 to 360,100.
The biggest changes were in arrivals from:
• Australia (up 10,600)
• United States of America (up 4,400)
• China (up 3,100).
Overseas trips by New Zealand residents were up 14,600 to 223,000.
The biggest changes were in departures to:
• Australia (up 4,900)
• China (up 1,700)
• Philippines (up 1,100)
• Indonesia (down 1,100).
Permanent and long-term arrivals were down 100 to 11,100.
Permanent and long-term departures were up 200 to 4,300.
Seasonally adjusted figures showed a net gain of 5,600 migrants.
In the November 2017 year compared with the November 2016 year:
• visitor arrivals numbered 3.71 million, up 263,900 (8 percent)
• New Zealand residents departed on 2.84 million trips overseas, up 260,400 (10 percent)
• permanent and long-term arrivals were 131,500, up 4,900 (4 percent)
• permanent and long-term departures were 61,200, up 4,900 (9 percent)
• the net gain in migrants was 70,400, unchanged from the previous November year.
