National’s fuel tax ad misrepresents their policy

National’s fuel tax ad misrepresents their policy

10 APRIL 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

National’s new campaign and TV ad against fuel taxes is disingenuous, considering the Party refuses to make any commitment to repeal the taxes if elected government, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesperson Louis Houlbrooke says, “It’s a nice ad, but it’s completely misleading. You would think, watching the advertisement, that National was committed to stopping Labour’s fuel tax. But Simon Bridges has actually said he might retain Labour’s fuel tax if National is elected.”

“Really, National’s only commitment has been to collect people’s signatures. If National want to be a credible government-in-waiting, they need to do better than that.”

“Instead of just complaining from the sidelines, National should confirm to voters that they will take action and reverse fuel taxes in government. Until then, their advertisement and petition campaign is meaningless.”
