Robertson right to ignore critics on Budget Responsibility

1 MAY 2018

Finance Minister Grant Robertson is right and should be congratulated for sticking to Labour's Budget Responsibility rules in the face of criticism, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

Taxpayers' Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says, “Using debt to fund new spending would obscure the real cost to the public, and pass the buck onto future generations already set to be taxed hard to pay for increasing superannuation costs. Not to mention, it would leave New Zealand ill-prepared with another natural disaster or economic crash.”

“The new Government’s increased tax take has made it considerably easier for the Government to stick to the Budget Rules, but taxpayers will only tolerate so much revenue grabbing. The challenge Robertson faces in the coming Budget is to cut wasteful expenditure, in order to avoid even more tax on hard-working New Zealanders.”
