Government ignoring blight of fiscal drag

Grant Robertson’s statement on Q&A that lifting tax thresholds is not on the Government’s agenda is bad news, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

Taxpayers’ Union economist Joe Ascroft says, “Inflation and wage growth means even the average income earner will be paying the top tax rate in 2022. Lots of families that don’t feel as though they are getting richer but are finding their tax obligations increase every year. The Minister of Finance should lift the tax thresholds and stop squeezing families.”

“In Canada, indexing tax thresholds to inflation is widely acknowledged to be a progressive policy position. Failing to index tax thresholds flattens the tax system and punishes families least able to meet their tax obligations.”
