Chief Wiggum-style bowling club bullying unacceptable

The role of the Police is to enforce the law, not attack bowling clubs for providing drinks for their members, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says “The Police regularly act like lobbyists on alcohol-related issues, but that’s simply not their job. Taxpayers expect to pay police officers to keep their streets safe, not tell the local bowling club they can’t serve their members a beer. When it comes to liquor licenses, Wellington police are acting like little tyrants.”

“The Police need to abandon their descent into taxpayer-funded public morality officers. If they want to start regulating us, they can always run for office. In the meantime, they should get back to basics. Preventing and solving crimes would be a good start.”

“There is constitutional convention that the Police enforce the law but strictly avoid lobbying – so why are Wellington Police in the hand of the puritans?”
