New Conservative Supports Saving Kiwi Kids

No-one really sets out to end a baby's life in the womb. However, poor choices, unexpected consequences, and changing circumstances mean that last year there were over 13,000 abortions in New Zealand. Little Kiwis lost.

While it is heartening that this is well down on the high figures of over 18,000 from the early 2000’s, it still represents a large group of hurting parents and families who have felt that they had no other choice and that this was the best option.

As New Zealand’s parliament looks at the issue of abortion, and the laws around it, New Conservative urges the government to uphold the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child 1989 before as well as after birth, and that it recognises a child’s right to life.

“If the government is prepared to spend $600,000 on Giant snails (http://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/5947252/Rare-snails-die-in-storage-mishap), or restrict oil exploration for the sake of dolphins, it should be a straightforward choice to work towards saving young New Zealanders,” says party leader Leighton Baker.

"We ask the government to review adoption laws, and provide clear understanding, counselling and appropriate timely information to those seeking an abortion, as well as deterring those who seek to coerce abortions. The 2017 figures of a 26% infertility rate in NZ indicate that there are many loving couples longing to raise children. "With 13,285 booties on display outside parliament today, it is a good time for us to reflect on the value we place on life and ask ourselves this question: "Is the only difference between a foetus and a baby, love?"" concludes Baker.
