Taxpayer-funded videogame a condescending waste of money

26 JULY 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Ministry of Social Development is either overfunded or mad to be spending $150,000 on a videogame to compete with the likes of The Sims and Zoo Tycoon, and apparently teach ‘how to run a business’, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says, “What would-be businessperson would seriously look to a government-driven videogame for tips? It’s great business for the game developers, but a poor deal for the rest of us.”

“The people with most to learn from this game could be politicians. If they play it they might discover that what businesses need is lower tax and more sensible regulation, not condescending advice from bureaucrats. At the very least, politicians playing this game would have less time to waste taxpayer money.”

“When the Ministry of Social Development can find $150,000 under the couch cushions to waste on projects like this, it suggests they are either overfunded, or failing to do their job of ensuring taxpayers’ money goes to where it is most needed.”
