Here’s to Sir Michael’s Tax Working Group

Here’s to Sir Michael’s Tax Working Group delivering more than the PM when it comes to business confidence

28 AUGUST 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A 'Business Advisory Council' is hardly the sort of economic kick start required to recover from declining business confidence with all eyes now on the Tax Working Group to deliver something to fire up New Zealand’s commercial sector, says the Taxpayers’ Union.

Union spokesman Jordan Williams says, “The business community want predictable, stable and good public policy to improve New Zealand’s competitiveness, not yet another talk fest.”

“In any case, the Tax Working Group should be leading the charge to develop tax changes to boost New Zealand’s competititveness. As shown by the US’s recent tax reform, there is no time like the present to put a rocket under the economy by reforming corporate tax.”

“Full tax deductibility, for example, would lead to more capital investment, higher productivity and higher wages. So let’s get on with it.”

Editor’s note:
The Taxpayers’ Union’s submission to the Tax Working Group, which includes discussion of tax deductibility in paras 71-77, is available at: www.taxpayers.org.nz/twg_submission.
