Questions about crisis at Treasury need addressing by Secretary

30 AUGUST 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NZ Initiative’s Chief Economist Eric Crampton’s revelations that internal performance indicators at the NZ Treasury have collapsed are alarming and require Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf to front up, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

“This is just the latest report suggesting that Treasury’s performance is deteriorating,” says Jordan Williams, Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director. “Why is the Secretary not fronting up to the now numerous questions about Treasury’s performance, capacity, and hiring practices?”

“It’s concerning that Treasury has chosen not to publish the 2017 external survey results on its website, as it has done with previous reports. It even appears the Treasury tried to block Mr Crampton from getting this information, which the public is entitled to under freedom of information laws. If Mr Makhlouf won’t explain what’s going on, it is time the Ombudsman investigated why efforts were made to keep this report under wraps,” says Mr Williams.
