Taxpayers’ Union welcomes fuel tax members’ bill

31 AUGUST 2018

The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union is welcoming National MP Jami-Lee Ross's members' bill abolishing Regional Fuel Taxes.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says, “It would have been all too easy for National to just use their opposition to regional fuel taxes to score political points. It’s good to see Jami-Lee Ross take a more constructive approach.”

“We encourage Mr Ross to lobby government MPs on an individual basis, especially Green MPs and MPs from Maori seats who will be concerned about this tax’s disproportionate effect on the poor.”

“Auckland Council claims they need the regional fuel tax to fund infrastructure. In fact, if Mayor Goff simply met his commitment to cut 3-6% of the Council’s budget in wasteful spending, the fuel tax wouldn’t be needed. Instead Aucklanders are being hit by their rates bill and at the petrol pump.”
