Meka Whaitiri needs to turn up and do her job like the rest of us

Meka Whaitiri should turn up to Parliament and do the job she’s paid to do, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says, ““We said the same thing about Todd Barclay: taking heat from the media is part of being a politician, and being accountable to the New Zealanders who voted you in. It’s certainly not an excuse to take gardening leave.”

“Ms Whaitiri is paid to fulfill specific responsibilities, including turning up to Parliament, debating and voting on legislation. Those of us funding Ms Whaitiri’s $160,000 salary get penalised when we shirk our work responsibilities. Why should it be any different for politicians?”

“If Ms Whaitiri wants to remain holed up in Gisborne, Hastings, or Wainuimata, she should probably start returning her paycheques to the taxpayer.”

“Of course, the National Party should be saying this, but they must realise they let Todd Barclay off the same offence.”
