This morning, National Leader Simon Bridges made a clear promise of “no new taxes” in a first-term National Government – a promise that has been welcomed by the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.
On the AM Show, Mr Bridges said, “If it's $2.44 as it is at the moment, I won't put new excise taxes on. There's a promise... I can't be clearer. No new taxes under a first-term National Government, if elected the next time, and that includes excise taxes.”
Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says, “As far as we can tell, this is the first time Mr Bridges has made this commitment.”
“Sadly, these promises are often worthless. Jacinda Ardern made the same promise, only to introduce punitive new fuel taxes, among others, once elected.”
“However, Mr Bridges says National is different, as the ‘party of lower tax’. We’ll be watching closely to ensure his party’s actions live up to his words.”
