Inaugural Conference of RatepayersNZ Inc

Media Release: Nelson Residents Assn

Date: 18 October 2018

Inaugural Conference of RatepayersNZ Inc
Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 November 2018
Ocean Lodge, 20 Muritai Street, Tahunanui, Nelson

An inaugural conference of RatepayersNZ will be held in Nelson on 10 and 11 November 2018. This conference is to bring ratepayers and residents groups together from around New Zealand to form one association.

Formation of RatepayersNZ means there will be a united ratepayer organisation to be the voice for, and driver of, local government reform and accountability.

The conference has an array of guest speakers including: Dr Catherine Strong speaking on "the effect of Council Codes of Conduct on freedom of speech"; Jarrod Coburn – on "the purpose, intent and structure of residents’ groups in NZ"; and Jordan Williams who is a Director and Co-Founder of the Taxpayers Union.

Barbara Arnott QSO, Mayor of Napier for 12 years, will give an insider's perspective to proceedings and how councils should relate to their communities. There will be Q&A after each speaker.

The Conference will also be looking to adopt a national constitution and elect the first Board.

The Conference had its genesis in widespread concern from ratepayer organisations throughout NZ over the poor performance of their local authorities and the perceived need for a stronger voice at a national level.

Registration forms for the Conference are available on the website.
