Budget cuts welcome – but why not go further?

12 DECEMBER 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Responding to reports that the Government has ordered Ministers to cut one percent in ‘low priority’ spending across all departments, New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says:

“This is a welcome acknowledgement of reality from the Government. There is wasteful spending in every department, even ‘sacred cow’ areas like health and education. The question we should be asking is why only cut one percent? A more useful exercise would be for Ministers to identify five, 10, or even 20 percent in wasteful spending.”

“The National Party, who have shopped this story that ‘cuts are coming’, should instead be welcoming this move. After all, they claim to be the party of lower taxes.”

“Our team of researchers uncover waste and inefficiency in government spending every day. In the Christmas spirit, our team are happy to meet with Ministers to help them deliver better value for taxpayers.”
