Putting a rocket under minimum wage is a moral failure
The Government’s decision to increase the minimum wage to $17.70 will devastate businesses in regional New Zealand, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.
Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says “The Prime Minister is clearly spending too much time in Ponsonby. Slamming regional businesses, who are already suffering from fuel tax hikes, will put the brakes on economic growth and hiring – devastating opportunities for prosperity in communities desperately in need of good news.”
“Paying
$17.70 for low-skilled workers straight out of high-school
in small-town New Zealand simply isn’t feasible. Denying
those young people opportunities to get employed by pricing
them out of the market with the highest income-adjusted
minimum wage rate in the OECD is a moral
disgrace.”
