Backdown on meat tax welcomed
30 JANUARY 2019
Responding to the Government ruling out a proposed meat tax and saying that Julie-Anne Genter's comments were a 'stupid figure of speech', New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says:
“If it wasn’t for a swift backlash from the likes of the Taxpayers’ Union and the general public, this tax would still be on the cards. Julie-Anne Genter’s initial response was far too open-minded. Now, New Zealanders have been saved from a nanny-state intervention that is becoming increasingly trendy with out-of-touch taxpayer-funded academics.
“Let the fate of this tax be a strong message to politicians keen on regressive taxes like a sugar tax or further tobacco tax hikes.”
