Scrapped Saudi sheep deal is belated victory for taxpayers

Responding to the cancellation of the planned Saudi abattoir installation, New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says:

“David Parker has done right by taxpayers in clawing back the last of the previous Government’s Saudi sheep bribe. The deal should have been scrapped as soon as the Auditor General exposed its lack of transparency and dubious legal justification.”

“This shameful display of corporate welfare is a mark on National’s legacy. While no one believed it, John Key claimed that if this deal was cancelled legal action would inevitably result. Now we’ll get to see.”

“Simon Bridges needs to confirm he’s learned from the mistakes of his predecessors and make a strong commitment to scrap corporate welfare regimes such as the Saudi Sheep deal, Callaghan Innovation and Film Industry Subsidies.”
